Our mission is to provide each student with a comprehensive and sequential program, led and taught by qualified art educators. Instruction includes production, analysis, history, and aesthetics of art and design. The program will encourage creativity and innovation, self-expression, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.

Art education is essential to the intellectual, social, and emotional development of each individual.  The arts promote 21st century skills necessary to succeed in today’s world including, but not limited to, effective communication, visual and media literacy, collaboration, and global awareness.

Visual Arts include the traditional fine arts such as drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture; media arts including film, video, graphic communications, animation, and emerging technologies; architectural, environmental, and industrial arts such as urban, interior, product, and landscape design; folk arts; and works of art such as ceramics, fibers, textiles and fashion design, jewelry, works in wood, paper, and other materials.

Our curriculum implements Massachusetts and national learning standards in the visual arts.

Chair With a Flair Auction to Benefit Cultural Programming in Marlborough
Whitcomb students and teachers recently used their artistic skills to benefit a community fund-raising event. Both art clubs embraced the challenge to take an older wooden chair and give it new life through paint and creativity. The “Chair With a Flair” Auction event gave the students a chance to work together toward a common goal.

The four-week process included brainstorming ideas, editing ideas together, sanding and preparing the chairs, and painting the finished design onto the chairs. The Whitcomb School art club students, and advisor Cheryl Wareck and Danielle Pollard, are very grateful to have been a part of this community event! About 30 hand-painted chairs will be auctioned on May 23, with all proceeds going to future cultural programming in Marlborough
